If you’re looking for a home healthcare provider who has an in-depth understanding of the different factors that can influence patient adherence, with a focus on both unintentional and intentional non-adherence, then talk to us.
Are you a pharmaceutical company?
We take a collaborative approach to understanding your product or brand, in order to build a home care offering that fully compliments your commercial and strategic objectives. Our patient support programme design begins with the identification of the key barriers to adherence to the specific drug we are working with. Only then can the appropriate support package be developed, ensuring that the right mix of support is delivered in the most effective way.
There is no one size fits all solution, we identify the best type of interventions tailored to the product delivered at the appropriate time intervals delivered by the most appropriate team of healthcare professionals.
How we work with you
We have extensive experience in the design and delivery of patient support programmes in conjunction with our pharmaceutical industry clients. A patients’ failure to adhere to their medication as prescribed (i.e. taking the correct doses at the appropriate intervals for the full duration of treatment) is well recognised. Our enhanced adherence programmes aim to maximise the likelihood that medicines will be taken as the healthcare professional intended, through a tailored mix of intervention, patient education, and support.
Unlike in the past, when effective treatments were often only available in hospital settings, effective remedies are available now in ambulatory settings. As chronic conditions become more prevalent, and treatment is more easily provided in the patient’s home, it makes modern treatments much more dependent on patient self-management. Often, in such settings, evidence-based treatments can fail to succeed because of a human factor, known as patient non-adherence.
With its prevalence reaching 50% of patients, medication non-adherence is a global issue of major public health concern. This is reflected in a recent report by the World Health Organisation which calls the non-adherence “a worldwide problem of striking magnitude” (WHO 2003). Given the interest and relevance of this topic, Pharmaxo Healthcare (through its clinical services team) has developed strategies to effectively change the behaviour of both patients and healthcare professionals, enhancing patient adherence across the UK.
A key challenge for improving health outcomes is to develop and deliver effective adherence-enhancing interventions. Pharmaxo Healthcare will work with you to develop, design and deliver bespoke programmes to address this.

If you are looking for a home healthcare partner who has an in-depth understanding of the different factors that can influence patient adherence, then talk to us at Pharmaxo Healthcare. Our programme design begins with the identification of the key barriers to adherence to the relevant drug class and more specifically to the specific drug we are working with. Only then can the appropriate support package be developed, ensuring that the right mix of support is delivered in the most effective way.

Examples of some of the interventions we deliver include:
- Reminders and access to information to overcome forgetfulness, confusion, and misunderstandings.
- Education to ensure that the patient understands the significance of their illness.
- Managing expectations to help patients prepare for and cope with side effects.
- Practical advice to minimise the potential for interactions and side effects.
- Listening to patient concerns and talking through barriers to adherence and persistence.
Our patient support programs help ensure that patients get the maximum benefit from their medication whilst supporting the demands of multiple stakeholders including regulators, commissioners, and clinicians.
Patient support programs
Pharmaxo Healthcare has experience in the design and delivery of Patient Support Programmes on behalf of our pharmaceutical industry clients.
We use adherence-related sciences to enable us to deliver our patient support programmes. This field operates across the boundaries between many disciplines, including, but not limited to: medicine, pharmacy, nursing, behavioural science, sociology, pharmacometrics, biostatistics and health economics. Pharmaxo Healthcare is proud of the experience it has across these areas.
We address non-adherence through unearthing the individual patients ‘adherence determinants’. As a result, Pharmaxo Healthcare has identified five main clusters of determinants which have a significant impact on patients’ adherence. These include factors relating to:
- Social-economic factors
- Healthcare team and system related factors
- Condition-related factors
- Therapy-related factors
- Patient-related factors
Our in-depth understanding of our patient’s determinants, enable us to design and offer multifaceted interventions to help overcome these barriers. Our programmes can target multiple adherence determinants and as a result provide support for patients on more complex and challenging regimes.
Nursing support
The Pharmaxo Healthcare nursing team are an integral part of our patient support programs and are trained to support patient adherence to the highest standards. Our nurses are provided with education and skills training on assessing the extent of nonadherence, its risk factors and evidence-based interventions.
We understand that adequate medication management by health professionals is key to guaranteeing optimal patient adherence. It is essential that our healthcare professionals have the relevant skills to support patients in the process of taking their medication as prescribed, both at the initiation of treatment and in the long-term (to avoid premature discontinuation of medication).
Our nursing team is at the forefront of delivering our patient support programmes to our patients. They aim to improve health outcomes and adherence through the delivery of our well-designed interventions and are pivotal to the success of the delivery of the interventions. Examples of some of the support provided include:
- Provision of patient instructions and counselling
- Reminder support
- Close follow-up
- Supervised self-monitoring
- Rewards for success
- Family therapy
- Behavioural change
- Crisis intervention
- Manual telephone follow-up
Our nursing teams work in partnership with our customers to enable patients to receive their care at home or an alternative setting under their guidance. These nurses are available throughout the UK to provide:
- Patient, carer, and healthcare professional education and training programs
- Drug and therapy administration
- Patient and home assessment visits
- Clinical monitoring and feedback
All of our highly experienced nurses satisfy strict regulatory requirements and are subject to screening via the Disclosure and Barring Service and are registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). We also ensure continued personal and professional development and regular clinical competency audits and reviews for all of our nurses.
