Commitment to achieving Net Zero
Pharmaxo Pharmacy Services Limited is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2045 for emissions scopes 1, 2 and 3. The commitment was made on 01/06/2023 by the Ian Muir, Chief Executive Officer.
Baseline Emissions Footprint
Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.
Emissions reduction targets
Our second carbon footprint assessment includes the Scope 1,2 & 3 elements of the Carbon Reduction Plan and covers 2023 emissions.
During 2023, the process for calculating the emissions related to goods transfer to our customers Scope 3 Category 9, was improved significantly and now factors in the consignment weights, the distance travelled for each leg of the logistics journey and the category of vehicle used for that leg.
Calculations for each consignment between Pharmaxo and the destination postcode is comprised of the specific emissions for the road, rail, air and maritime legs of the journey which is then multiplied by the number of consignments to that destination.
With this more detailed and data driven approach, the overall emission value is more accurate and significantly lower than the baseline and 1st reporting year. The emissions data is now also reported under Scope 3 Category 4 as the activity is completed by a 3rd party logistics provider under contract. As there is no longer any Scope 3 Category 9 activity, reporting will be discontinued for this category.
Our ultimate goal is to achieve Net Zero before 2050 targeting 2045, by means of future potential carbon reduction activities and milestone targets. We applied conservative annual reductions with major step changes every 5 years. These targets will be reviewed in 2025 and amended to reflect the reduced emissions results arising from the improved accuracy..
In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.
We projected that carbon emissions will decrease by 20% over the next five years to 386 tCO2e by 2027. This is a reduction of 90% vs the Baseline supported by the significant improvement in granularity of the logistics data available for the 2nd reporting year.
Progress against these targets can be seen in the graph below:
Carbon Reduction Projects
Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives
The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented during the 2022 baseline / reporting year. The carbon emission reduction achieved by these schemes was evaluated at the project design stage to support the implementation but not possible to accurately measure once in place. The reduction measures will remain in effect when performing the contract.
Carbon Reduction Projects have included:
- Developing proposals for achieving reduced emissions in upstream and downstream deliveries as part of our initial 5-year plan.
- Introduction of internal energy metering system to enable targeted energy usage monitoring to support energy efficiency improvements.
- Evaluation of potential renewable energy projects, carbon offsetting and alternative fuel solutions
- Review and update of policies related to business travel, company car provision and logistics and distribution contracts.
- Survey of employee commuting needs to enable development of Green Travel & Commuting initiatives.
